Owlbears are large monstrosities looking like a cross between an owl and a bear.
Appearance[]
An owlbear resembles an eight- to nine-foot-tall[6] bear covered in fur and feathers with the head of an owl.[1]
History[]
Outside of Critical Role canon, there are two popular theories of the owlbears' origin: scholars claim that a demented wizard created the first specimen by crossing a giant owl with a bear; however, mythology spread by elves says that owlbears have fey roots and existed in the Feywild for thousands of years.[1]
At any rate, they existed during the Calamity, when a teenage Alyxian's village hunted owlbears and deer, and the way he handled an incident in which two owlbears mauled his hunt captain Saqiri Yestrana was a lifelong source of regret.[7]
"The Sunken Tomb" (1x44)[]
Vex'ahlia saw an owlbear on the banks of Marrowglade Loch,[8] guarding the Sunken Tomb of Purvan Suul.
'"Harvest Close" (2x17)[]
During the Harvest Close Festival of 835 PD in Zadash, the Mountain Makers faced off against and were outmatched by a pair of owlbears, resulting in the group being eliminated from the Victory Pit tournament.[9]
Trivia[]
- Velora Vessar, half-sister to Vex and Vax, had a plush owlbear toy.[10] Vex gave her an owlbear feather as a keepsake to remember her siblings' love for her.[11]
- Suvo offered for sale what she called a "treated owlbear matron hand".[12]
