Purvan Suul was a follower of the Raven Queen during the Age of Arcanum. After ritualistically giving his name to the Raven Queen when he swore himself to her service, Purvan preferred to be called simply The Champion.

As an NPC in Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, he is played by Brennan Lee Mulligan. In The Legend of Vox Machina, Season Two, he is voiced by Matthew Mercer.

Appearance[]

Purvan had long dark hair and light brown skin. On the eve of the Calamity, at an event in the city of Avalir, he wore a mantle of feathers and mud-caked leather boots. Notably at the gala, he was not wearing any armor. His expression was grave and severe.[8]

In The Legend of Vox Machina, when fighting, he was shown using a sword, his vestige and a skull-like helm.

Biography[]

"Excelsior" (E3x01)[]

Purvan was tasked by the Raven Queen to speak with the city leadership of Avalir during the pre-Replenishment gala. He arrived at the party with his wolf companion Galdric, but despite being stewarded by a member of the Ring of Silver, he was met with derision by the magocracy for his devotion to one of the gods.[9] Before leaving, he was able to impart a warning concerning the unknown whereabouts and actions of Vespin Chloras to two members of the Ring of Brass, namely Loquatius Seelie and Zerxus Ilerez.[10]

The Calamity[]

During the Calamity that followed, Purvan's actions as the Champion of the Raven Queen grew to legend that would be known in the Post-Divergence era. At some point, he gained a set of powerfully enchanted leather armor, the Deathwalker's Ward, which would be later known as one of the Vestiges of the Divergence.

When the Champion eventually died, he was interred within a tomb in Issylra nearby to Vasselheim. He was buried wearing the Deathwalker's Ward. His still-living companion Galdric was sealed within his pendant, Raven's Slumber, and interred alongside him. At some point, the tomb would sink beneath the water of the Marrowglade Loch.

In late 810 PD, Vox Machina sought the Vestiges of the Divergence in order to combat the Chroma Conclave. The first Vestige they recovered was the Deathwalker's Ward, plundering Purvan's tomb and defeating the kuo-toa and beholder that had taken over it with the aid of Kima of Vord, Kashaw Vesh, Zahra Hydris.

Purvan's tomb was protected by a necromantic trap which killed Vex'ahlia when it was triggered by Percival.[11] During the resurrection ritual, her brother Vax'ildan pledged his life to the Raven Queen, becoming her next champion and passing Purvan's title onto him.
