Yeenoghu is one of the demon lords of the Abyss.

Description[]

Yeenoghu is a large, bestial, feral, angry demon. He is ever-hungering, ever wandering to conquer and devour, leaving destruction, fetid meat, and waves of yipping, angry hyenas to devour what was left behind in his wake.[1]

History and relationships[]

Yeenoghu is the Demon Prince of Gnolls. Gnolls were first created when a Demon Prince, presumably Yeenoghu, did battle on Exandria during the Calamity and a pack of hyenas was caught in the divine eminence,[2][3] and cultists hoping to gain favor with Yeenoghu have used demon ichor to transform hyenas into gnolls.[4] Although there are gnoll cults that pay homage to Yeenoghu[5] and through Yeenoghu's power raise some gnolls as undead gnoll witherlings,[6] other gnolls reject that influence.[7][8]

Baphomet, Demon Prince of Beasts, is a patron of many man-beast entities, and perhaps because of their overlapping patronage Baphomet and Yeenoghu are rivals who frequently clash.[9]

In 835 PD a force of gnolls launched an unusually large and organized raid on Alfield. Watchmaster Bryce Feelid's overnight research turned up information indicating that these gnolls worshiped Yeenoghu.[10] The Mighty Nein tracked the gnolls back to their base in a mine and, with the help of Shakäste, killed the gnolls, another humanoid, and a manticore who seemed to be leading the cult.[11] In the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, set in early 836 PD, the high-level adventure hook Yeenoghu's Army centers on the idea that the raid on Alfield was just a way to test the town's defenses for a follow-up incursion by demons loyal to Yeenoghu.[12]

In other Dungeons & Dragons media[]

Yeenoghu's might and clout don't compare to the likes of Orcus, but he controls a layer of the Abyss, Yeenoghu's Realm, where he hunts lesser demons while he schemes to conquer other layers opportunistically. Seeking the downfall of civilization, Yeenoghu sends gnoll servants and (rarely) other cultists to attack and destroy cities.[13]

Yeenoghu is often depicted as a massive gnoll about fourteen feet in height. His fur is matted and his armor amassed from fallen enemies.[14] Yeenoghu's symbol is his unique exotic weapon: a huge triple-headed flail.
